Double Kotch: Major Lazer + Deejay Theory Take On QQ’s “One Drop”

By | Music & Reviews

Double dose of pure winery here from two formidable camps in the taking-dancehall-to-the-next-level department. On the right you have those guys Major Lazer who you’ve possibly heard about, and on the left our own Deejay Theory, who’s been on an absolute tear lately. They’ve both taken arguably the biggest party song in Jamaica right now, and juiced it up in all different directions to make the dance get buckwild. The original from QQ ft. Venomus is a little ironic in itself, considering QQ first buss on the scene as a likkle youth during the one-drop revival era with a nyabhingi single called “Poverty” on the Serious Times riddim. Fast-forward some years and have the same voice—all grown up now—charting a massive dance tune called “One Drop” that’s a far cry from traditional one-drop reggae. Nevertheless the tune is madd, and a surefire reaction getter at any dance right now.

Major Lazer work their magic on the remix with some help from Australia’s Swick at the boards, turning the 100bpm original into another of their signature festival and big room anthems. Nothing but energy on this one. Stream and download below:

https://soundcloud.com/majorlazer/qq-major-lazer-swick-one-drop]

Theory flips it a different kind a way, keeping more to the same tempo as the original but giving it a dutty 808 facelift with spooky synths and drops. If you’re a dancehall DJ ready to turn it up a notch this one is a no brainer. Ladies you know what to do…. Stream below, download

NYMAG- FASHION WEEK CLOSING PARTY W/ ?UESTLOVE

By | In The News

Fashion Week in NYC is coming to an end this Thursday and what better way to wrap up an all star week of high profile run way shows and events, than a party with DJ Questlove. NY Mag is hosting a closing ceremonies party on Thursday September 12 at The Gramercy Terrace (Roof Top) in Manhattan.

Check out NY Mag’s recent interview with Quest below

Questlove Is Stopped So Frequently by the Police, ‘It’s Like Breathing’

One thing Questlove won’t miss about the Bloomberg years? Stop-and-frisk. “To me it feels unconstitutional,” the Roots drummer told Daily Intelligencer last night at a Ziegfeld Theater screening of Boardwalk Empire‘s fourth season.

While Questlove hasn’t been stopped and frisked in the classic sense — on the street, hands up against the wall, that sort of thing — he says he’s been needlessly stopped three times in just the past year while driving.

“I guess to some people I might look suspicious, a person of my stature, my physical appearance in a high-end silver car, but that’s how I get around the city,” he says. “I don’t tweet about it because it happens so much that it’s just regular to me. It’s like breathing.”

He adds, “I shouldn’t accept it lying down, but sometimes it’s just, you just got to shrug it off.”

Questlove says he’s fortunate enough to travel with an alibi: his book. “Usually — I won’t say it’s a saving grace — but what’s made it go smoother is thank God there’s a copy of my book in the back of the car. I shouldn’t have to do that, but it’ll take the heat off me.”

So, there you go, young black New Yorkers: Just make sure you have your book with you when you’re stopped by the police for no reason and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

Neff Takes Over Pac Sun SOHO!

By | In The News

Neff is hitting New York City to take over the Pac Sun pop-up shop in SoHo Sunday August 4th from 1-8pm. The event features a mix of art, music, and fashion with appearances from Mad Decent rapper Riff Raff, the people’s choice DJ Envy, and the legendary Biz Markie.

The event kicks off at 1pm with DJ Balzita on the turntables and MADSTEEZ creating one of his signature paintings live in store. The painting will be raffled off at the end of the day. Get there early because Neff will be lacing the first 75 people through the doors with a custom MADSTEEZ painting. The party keeps rocking with Riff Raff in the building at 3pm for a meet and greet. The hometown kid DJ Envy hits the ones and twos at 4pm AND the legend Biz Markie blesses the needles at 6pm. Neff is stoked for this event, we can’t wait to see you there!

Daft Punk “Get Lucky” [ft. Pharrell] Daft Life Limited / Columbia

By | Music & Reviews

“We’ve come too far, to give up who we are.” So goes the hook for the first single from Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, which first existed as a ten-second loop (eventually extended to a more DJ-friendly length of ten hours), then a 70-seconds-long bi-coastal ad that premiered at Coachella and on “Saturday Night Live”. You can scan the lyric as a line about empowerment or emancipation, but coming from Pharrell, it very well could be just about emancipating some Eres thongs on a Saturday night.
“Get Lucky”‘s real elegance lies in the hands of Nile Rodgers, which is no doubt the Robots’ intent. With that sprightly, ageless platinum guitar riff, “Get Lucky” emulates the type of choppy lines Nile once gave to Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” thirty-plus years ago. The vocodered break from Daft Punk thrills as well, but Rodgers is the reason that ten seconds of “Get Lucky” could dilate into minutes and hours of pleasure without tedium ever settling in.
