By | In The News

This month on the 17th of December we bring you for the first time in NYC the mighty EMALKAY (Dub Police), east coast legend DIESELBOY, Bass Fueled Mischiefs HELLFIRE MACHINA and local hero Liondub.
_____________________________________________________________________

EMALKAY [www.facebook.com/emalkayofficial]

With initial support in the form of grime veteran Plastician, “Birmingham’s finest” Emalkay gained the attention of South London based label Boka Records with the warped, future bass drones and epic strings of Gut Feeling. Continuing the success, Testing The Waters EP was released in October 2006 followed by Monsters in June 2007. The revolutionary sound of Mecha, released in the fall of 2007, gained Emalkay support from the likes of Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs and breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty, as well as many of the leading figures of the current dubstep scene. It seemed Emalkay’s own potential as a pivotal dubstep artist was finally being realised. His final release on Boka Records was the reggae influenced My Story in April 2008. In the fall of 2008, Emalkay produced Explicit – a tune that gradually captured the interest of such prominent dubsteppers as Benga and received major support from acts such as The Scratch Perverts and drum and bass duo Chase and Status. After being approached by Caspa however, the track was finally released on the Dub Police label in February 2009 after much anticipation.

DIESELBOY [http://www.djdieselboy.com/]

Dieselboy is the stage name of Damian Higgins, an American drum and bass DJ, producer, remixer, founder of the Human Imprint music label, and co-founder of its sublabel SubHuman launched September 2010.
On New Year’s Eve 2009 during a 3D Productions event at Club 24 in Washington, D.C., Dieselboy played a 3-hour multi-sub-genre set including drum and bass, dubstep and electro. The enthusiastic crowd response encouraged him to continue experimenting with this new format into 2010. Dieselboy is the best-selling American drum and bass musician, was the first American to be voted into the UK-based Drum & Bass Arena Top 10 DJs 2004 online poll, and has played events on six continents. He was also the first d&b artist to chart a single on Billboard’s dance chart with Invid in 2000. (Source: The Washington Post) Dieselboy is sponsored by DC Shoes and Pioneer Pro DJ.
Currently based in Brooklyn, Dieselboy has also performed at rock festivals and extreme sports exhibitions. Dieselboy tracks have been heard on MTV and ESPN, and in videogames. Higgins has also designed graphics for T-shirts, logos, fliers, buttons, CD’s and record sleeves. Dieselboy is represented by William Morris Electronic, the high profile booking agency’s electronic artist division, and Circle Management.

DJ QUESTLOVE AND ECLECTIC METHOD @ WEBSTER HALL !

By | In The News

This Friday Dec 3, get ready for another off the hook party when Questlove and Eclectic Method tear down the roof at Webster Hall in NYC !

Questlove [http://www.myspace.com/questlove]

Ahmir Khalib Thompson (born on January 20, 1971), known professionally as ?uestlove or Questlove (also known as BROther ?uestion, Questo or Brother Question), is an American drummer, DJ, music journalist and record producer. He is best known as the drummer for the Grammy Award-winning band The Roots, which is now the in-house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He has produced for artists such as Common, D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Jay-Z, Nikka Costa and more recently, Al Green and John Legend. He is a member of the production teams the Soulquarians, the Grand Negaz, and The Grand Wizzards.
Eclectic Method [http://www.eclecticmethod.net/]

Eclectic Method is the name of an audio-visual act from London, formed in 2002 by Geoff Gamlen, Ian Edgar (aka Cutswift) and Jonny Wilson (aka B.R.K.).
Eclectic Method released their first audio-visual mixtape – the result of mixing, sampling and rhythmically re-editing video from music video, TV and film entitled Bootleg Video Mix in March 2002. After seeing this CD-ROM, MTV commissioned Eclectic Method to work on the MTV Mash video mix show on MTV Europe (2003–2004)[3]. They followed this up by releasing the We’re Not VJs DVD, possibly the world’s first a/v mashup mix DVD in 2005.
They quickly developed their audio-visual style into a live performance featuring video turntables (Pioneer DVJ-1000) – mixing the visuals and audio live[4]. As a live act, they have travelled around the world playing hundreds of gigs in Asia, North America, South America, Europe and the Middle East. After their early period, creating what were considered “bootleg” and “unofficial” video remixes, Eclectic Method were called upon by artists like Fatboy Slim[5] & U2 and by film, video, and television companies such as New Line Cinema[6] and Palm Pictures to create custom a/v remixes.

BFM @ WEBSTER HALL w/ NERO,HELLFIRE MACHINA,BROKEN NOTE AND MORE

By | In The News

NERO [http://www.myspace.com/nerouk]

NERO have become a big name in both the Drum and Bass and Dubstep scenes, often fusing both styles of music in their DJ sets. They started with DnB, joining DJ SS’s Formation Records in the Summer of 2004. Since then Dan and Joe’s tracks have caused quite a stir, gaining huge support from DJs like Andy C, Grooverider and Friction, as well as radio airplay from Zane Lowe, Jo Whiley, Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Steve Lamacq and Fabio & Grooverider, to name just a few.
In June 2006 Nero released their acclaimed EP, “Requiem EP” on Formation Records. The EP featured 4 top tracks, Requiem, Bitch I’m Gone, Autopsy and Bad For the Brain. High Contrast included Bitch I’m Gone in his mix for the legendary Fabric Live series, Fabric Live 25. 2009 saw Nero’s first release on iconic label Breakbeat Kaos. The killer track ‘Act Like You Know’, backed with Sound in Motion and a dubstep edit of the title track, has been hitting dancefloors across the world for the last year and was picked up by Fresh and Adam F.

Onto Dubstep…. Nero’s debut dubstep release, ‘This Way feat. Alana’, became one of the biggest dubstep tunes of 2008 and is still selling big units across the world. Since then, Nero’s consistent releases have made them one of the most talked about acts in dubstep. Their remix of the Streets’ tune ‘Blinded by the Lights’ was a massive radio hit as well as a dancefloor smasher played by DJ’s from Chase and Status and Skream to Tiesto and Diplo. More recently Nero have remixed La Roux and Deadmau5 to devastating effect. The boy’s DJing career has also taken off this year, October saw an intensive gigging schedule which included supporting Deadmau5, Chase & Status and Zane Lowe on their UK tours.

Nero have recently signed exclusively to Chase & Status’ label MTA and are currently working on their debut album… watch this space!

HELLFIRE MACHINA’S PHANTOM EP OUT NOW ON BRAP DEM RECORDINGS!

By | In The News

brapdem.com
Stepping out from The Big Apple, but originating from London, Jody Shires and Tom Williams are HELLFIRE MACHINA. BRAP DEM! Recordings present a new 3 track release from this fantastic duo. With years of releases and work done in the global dance music scene, HELLFIRE MACHINA creates rich, dub- soaked, bass-music, that burns dance floors and ear buds alike.

PHANTOM has sinister, heavy, pipe organs, mutated in dub creating tension and excitement. The bass drops with rub-a-dub fury, haunting the dance floor with audio brain wash. Phantom is infectious and gives a proper sound system workout.

BUCKTOWN FUNKSTA has light, airy, build-ups that change into crucial bouncy bass fuelled snares and that is reminiscent of classic jungle and drum and bass. Funky and rich in texture still holding strong with great changes and atmospherics that add to the flavour.

DEMONIC BELLS is a minimal evil tinged spacious piece. Ghostly rave alarm and guitar elements drift in and out all driven with rich sub-bass.

Bass Fueled Mischief @ Webster Hall w/Caspa-Vibesquad-Antiserum-Hellfire Machina

By | In The News

After a monumental launch party last month with Excision/Reid Speed/Mochipet/Hellfire Machina, the BFM crew is back at Webster Hall!

For this installment of Bass Fueled Mischief we bring you the return of the mighty CASPA…………….

London’s king of jump up dubstep will be joined by

Vibesquad

VibeSquaD has the look and feel of a regular humanoid DJ / producer, but as the Crunkadelic Bass Traveler he tours the solar system bumpin’ his signature sound to all the deep space inhabitants. His spaceship leaks beats to the outer edges of the galaxy, leaving a blast of subterranean ill bass in his wake. Creatures are drawn to these sounds, regularly converging in large groups to observe and move to his music.
Taking cues from classic electronic acts like Kraftwerk, The Art of Noise, and Front 242, VibeSquaD incorporates the reliable sounds of Chicago, Detroit, Miami, and the UK, informs it with his background in classic rock, psychedelic jam, and diverse jazz roots, then zaps it all with neon lasers.
The sounds he produces transmit a positivity capable of inducing anything from temporary stress relief to outright elation. Tracks from his album Joyful Noise cause a type of heightened euphoria in fans, leading them to shake and bounce uncontrollably and convince their robot and alien friends to voyage thousands of light years just to witness his massive dance parties.

Antiserum

At the forefront of San Francisco’s exploding dubstep scene, Antiserum continues to landscape the globe with the West Coast’s most visceral bass music. His production steeps in hip hop, reggae, and heavy metal – creating environments both dark and light, with an established tectonic bassline at 140bpm. His dj sets stretch between vast, futuristic soundscapes and rich, euphoric beats that are always packed with tons of original and unreleased material.

Antiserum has dropped over ten 12″ vinyl records on some of the biggest labels in the genre: Argon, Narco.Hz, Full Melt, Cyberfunk, Steps in Time, Muti, Hollow Point, Mode, War, Bassism, and True Tiger. Keep watch for his forthcoming 4-track EP on Excision’s Rottun Recordings, a release on Caspa’s Dub Police label, and a collaboration with 12th Planet on DJ Craze’s Slow Roast, backed with a Jakes Remix – all set for release later this year. He is currently working on new material with 12th Planet, SPL, and Truth from New Zealand, as well as a remix of dub madman Lee Scratch Perry & Dubblestandart for a documentary by David Lynch. He has collaborated with dubstep heavy hitters Babylon System, DJ Distance, Eskmo, Noah D, SPL, DJG, TRUTH, The Spit Brothers, & Vancouver based producer/vocalist Ill-esha. Other recent projects include a remix of techno legend Lenny Dee, two tracks featuring MC Messinian, a remix of london based rock band “Spektrum”, and a remix of Excision & Liquid Stranger’s “Get to the point”. Leaving a trail of ignited dance floors from Vancouver to Sydney, Antiserum continues to keep the bass pounding and the subs smoldering.

Hellfire Machina

Since migrating from London, Tom and Jody have firmly made their presence felt in New Yorks bass music community. Constantly touring and promoting parties, this deadly team of subsonic soldiers don’t show any signs of slowing down, slaying shows from LA to Brooklyn with wave after wave of block rockin panty droppin next level riddims. With production and project management credits on last years Enter The Dubstep WU TANG album, they are currently crafting an album for Brand Nubian alongside regular partners in crime Nebulla, Soroka and Lenny Dee which is due for release at the end of this year. With an ever constant stream of digital and vinyl releases Hellfire’s trademark but diverse sound has embedded itself deep into the lansdscape and their own artist album is due for release spring 2011.

REID SPEED [www.myspace.com/reidspeed]
When Reid Speed began spinning records in 1996, she first generated curiosity as one of few female DJs at the time. However, she quickly earned respect for her talent in the highly competitive NYC scene. By the summer of 1997, she was working with rave promoters, Stuck on Earth Promotions and the following year as a member of the Direct Drive crew. At these events, she cut her teeth playing alongside the top names in the genre.

Reid Speed has been a dancefloor destroyer for over a decade, and is second to none when it comes to heavy bass genre mashing. She currently runs Play Me Records, a leader in dubstep and fidget house, while simultaneously holding down a full production and tour schedule. As one of the first US DJs to champion speed garage & 2 step (which have become todays’s fidget house and dubstep), her new label’s quick rise to the top of the dance charts reflects her continually forward thinking musical evolution. Reid started out in the New York City underground working behind the counter at the legendary Breakbeat Science store, holding residencies with Stuck on Earth, Direct Drive & Camouflage while in college at the School of Visual Arts. Drum and bass at the start, she was soon was seduced by the sounds of 2 step and speed garage and began DJing full time, producing tracks and throwing her own events. Signing to Breakbeat Science’s label in 2001, she released her first mix “Resonance” to much critical acclaim, and successfully followed it up with 2003’s “Life After Dark.” On subsequent tours with Om artists Ming & FS and Colette she honed her precise genre mashing mixing skills and developed a synergy with her crowds that is unmatched. Her tunes and mixes get play from many of the worlds most respected radio stations and DJs including BBC/ Annie Nightingale (voted Reid Best Mix of 2008), Sweidish Egil (Power 106 LA), Z-trip, Drop the Lime, Jaimie Fanatic, 12th Planet, Bassnectar & DJ Dan. Whether on the floor, in the studio or behind the decks Reid keeps pushing boundaries forward every step she takes.

MOCHIPET [www.myspace.com/mochipet]
Born in Taiwan R.O.C. to rocket scientist father and kindergarten teacher mother, David Wang (a.k.a. Mochipet) has been tinkering with electronics all of his life. However, it was not until he added music to the equation that something began to spark. Growing up on metal guitar, Avant-Garde Jazz, and mainstream hip-hop, David has always been a person of diversity. And we can see this in his music, ever changing, and always evolving.
Through out his life, David has worked as a Jazz Radio DJ, Web Designer, and Tub Boat Dispatcher. This might explain his vast musical collaborations with artists such as Legendary Skateboarder Ray Barbee (Powell Peralta), Techo producer Ellen Allien (Berlin), Hip-hop MCs Mikah9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Casual (Hieroglyphics Oakland), and Raashan Ahmad (Crown City Rockers), Electro Miami Gangster Otto Von Schirach (Ipecac), Booty Bass Rockstars 215 The Freshest Kids and Spank Rock (BigDada) Mashup Glitch Tweeker Kid606 (Tigerbeat6), Edwardian suit-wearing Daedelus (Ninjatune), Glitch Popstars Jahcoozi (Kitty-Yo), and Avant-Garde Jazz Legend Weasel Walter (Flying Luttenbachers).

He has shared the stage with artists such as: Autechre, DJ Qbert, Kid Koala, Luke Vibert, DnTEL, Modeselektor, Dat Politics, M.I.A, Flying Lotus, Chris Clark, Boom Bip, Jahcoozi, , Meat Beat Manifesto, Devlin & Darko (Spank Rock), Gift of Gab, Lafeef, Otto Von Schirach, Matmos, Cargo Natty, Cristian Vogal, Fluokids, Juan Maclean, edIT (Glitchmob), Megasoid, Tittsworth, Kid606, Ellen Allien, Andrea Parker, Aaron Spectre, Felix Da Housecat, Carl Craig, Bucovina Club, Superpitcher, The Bug, The DeathSet, Fabio & MC Rage, Forest Green, Daedelus, Bogdan Racynski, DJ Plasticman, Mikah 9, Abstract Rude, Tussle, Dino Felipe, Jimmy Edgar, Lazersword, Mia Doi Todd, Ken Ishii, Jason Forest, MachineDrum, Doormouse, Babyland, Chow Nasty, Mike Boo, Greg Davis, Drop the Lime, Lusine, and Phon.o, just to name more then a few.
David’s music has caught the ears of the Sports and Skateboarding world as well. His song Sharp Drest (With Eric Solo and oonceoonce) is featured in the NBA2k9 Videogame along side acts such as Beastie Boys, N.E.R.D., and The Cool Kids. You may have also heard his music on FuelTV and Directv with skate legends such as: Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Christian Hasoi, Ray Barbee, Laban Pheidias, Jason “Weeman” Acuna, and Anthony Van Engelen.
David has also held residencies at [Eraser] Club (Los Angeles) and Trouble Club (San Francisco) along side residents: edIT, [a]pendics shuffle, John Tejada, Kid606, Josh Kit Clayton, Matt Laszuk, Philip Sherburne, and Sutekh. He is currently staring up a new monthly in San Francisco called Bass Camp with EC and ArtNowSF that will feature acts from around the world.
And if all this is not enough he was nominated as one of the Best Electronic Act of 2008 by many publications, such as Clash Magazine (UK) and SFBG. His composition “Dessert Search for Techno Baklava” has been performed by a 20 piece orchestra, Alarm Will Sound, around the world, notably at New York’s Carnegie Hall, and Amsterdam’s Holland Festival!
David runs an independent record label called Daly City Records and endorses products such as M-Audio and Puma. He is currently working on several new projects including ones with Joyo Velarde, Lyrics Born, Antipop Consortium’s M. Sayyid, and Chicago’s MC Zulu. Keep an eye out 2 new records from him in 2009: “Master P on Atari” and “Bunnies & Muffins,” both coming out on Daly City Records this year!
HELLFIRE MACHINA [www.myspace.com/hellfiremachina]
Prior to the birth of this project in late 2008. Jody Shires and Tom Williams collectively had over 60 releases under their belts, along with production work for grammy nominated artists, numerous UK top ten remixes, 5 Breakspoll Awards, Best International Dj in the Spanish EDM awards 3 years running and a history in bass culture that is second to none.. The year is now 2010, sonic exploration in the realm of bass fueled riddims is the primary mission for Hellfire Machina. With residencies at New Yorks legendary Club Love, Darkroom in Brooklyn and Psychadelic Radio in SF, it’s no wonder these guys are in high demand. Their weekly radio show on dubstepfm has gone from strength to strength and has helped push the awareness of bass music across the globe as well as providing a platform to hear the latest Hellfire creations first, often in early stages as they are delevoped in their now famously named studio Planet Twisted. Ending last year with A and R and project management credits for the Wu Tang ‘Enter The Dubstep’ album and a string of singles and remixes, they have hit the ground running in 2010. A fresh batch of releases due to hit the streets imminently, a new label project with techno legend Lenny Dee in the works as well as the next chapter in the infamous BASS FUELED MISCHIEF parties in their homebase of NYC. This is the age of the machine with Hellfire firmly at the controls…………….. Read more: http://www.myspace.com/hellfiremachina#ixzz0t6oZo5bH
